Honduran authorities confirmed last week that a 27-year-old Tegucigalpa man with the alias “Liro” was extradited from Spain to Honduras to face murder charges for the assassination of Darwin Josué Arias in Tegucigalpa on May 8, 2019. “Liro” previously fled Honduras for Spain to avoid capture.

Regarding the murder incident, Honduran authorities said:

…  the incident occurred on May 8, 2019, when the victim was in the Guillén neighborhood of the capital, in front of a church, inside his vehicle.

Suddenly, two people aboard a motorcycle approached, one of them with a rifle, and they approached the victim and without saying a word they began to shoot repeatedly… They immediately fled the scene with unknown direction.

At the time, El Heraldo newspaper reported that the car was left running “while the body was lying in the driver’s seat.”

“Liro” left Honduras on February 18, 2020, from the Ramón Villeda Morales airport in Lima, Cortés, bound for Spain to evade Honduran justice.

Interpol subsequently issued an international red alert for “Liro,” a hairdresser by trade.

Interpol-Honduras OCN and Spanish authorities worked together, resulting in his extradition from Valencia, Spain, to Interpol officials from the Police Investigation Directorate (DPI) at the Palmerola International Airport in Comayagua, Honduras.

Commenting on the extradition, Honduran authorities said:

International collaboration between countries is essential in the fight against crime and thus guarantee the security and well-being of citizens and in this case it is a clear example that impunity is not forever.

In this way, it is demonstrated that, although citizens try to evade the justice of their country, they are not exempt from being required by the authorities, and through effective cooperation between countries, transnational crime can be counteracted.

“Liro” will now answer the murder charges against him in Honduras while Honduran authorities seek the capture of Liro’s accomplice.
