The Police Investigation Directorate (DPI) in Honduras reported today, May 2, 2024, that they arrested a 32-year-old security guard and his 21-year-old housewife in La Ceiba, Honduras, for patricide and family abuse after their four-year-old son died from beatings and cigarette burns.

According to the authorities, on Tuesday, April 30, the four-year-old was admitted to the General Hospital of Atlántida. While doctors tried to save his life, he unfortunately passed away because of the severity of the burns and beatings to his body.  These injuries were confirmed by a forensic medical opinion following an autopsy, which concluded that the boy “was subjected to abuse and mistreatment.”

With the evidence in hand, investigators assigned to the Departmental Criminal Investigation Unit #1 (UDIC-1) of the DPI of La Ceiba, in coordination with the Crimes Against Life Prosecutor’s Office of the Public Ministry, arrested the parents (the boy’s father and stepmother, respectively) in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of La Ceiba.

Commenting on the arrests, the authorities thanked the investigators and technicians for the work “to clarify the facts and thus reach the truth.”

They added: “The DPI continues to work constantly, with the aim of providing a response to citizen complaints, through better technical and scientific investigation and thus bring to justice those responsible for committing these crimes against the most vulnerable.”
