New Zealand Visitor Drowns Near Governor’s Beach Loop Cayman Islands

The Royal Cayman Islanda Police Service said that at around 7:15 pm pn Wednesday, May 1, officers and other emergency services were dispatched by the 911 communication center to a resort in the vicinity of Governors Beach, West Bay Road, regarding a report of an unresponsive male on the beach in front of the resort.

According to the report the man was snorkeling with family when he decided to return to shore on his own. The other family members continued snorkeling, and on later returning to shore, they could not locate the man.

It was soon discovered that the man was still in the ocean, and on reaching him, it was discovered that he was unresponsive. He was assisted back to shore by persons present, and CPR was administered until EMS personnel attended and took over.

The man was transported to the George Town Hospital by ambulance, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased by the attending doctor.

He is a 65-year-old visitor from New Zealand.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the death are currently ongoing, but are not believed to be suspicious at this time.

The RCIPS offers condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
