Cayman’s Davonte Howell and Jaiden Reid won gold and silver medals, respectively, today, Saturday, March 30, 2024, in the Under 20 Boys’ 100 Meter Dash at the CARIFTA Games being held in Grenada.

Hints of their fantastic performance came in the semi-final races, where Reid recorded 10.29 seconds and Howell clocked 10.35 seconds. However, the duo faced a challenge for the finals, as Jamaica’s Javorne Dunkley held the fastest time of 10.23 after all semi-finals.

Some fans probably expected that, when it came to the finals this Saturday evening, Jamaica’s Dunkley would translate his number one time in the semi-finals to a win in the finals.

Despite Dunkley’s best efforts, he was unable to catch Howell from the Cayman Islands during the finals. Howell appeared determined to win from the moment he left the starting blocks in lane 3. Howell went on to secure the gold medal with a time of 10.15 seconds, while his teammate Reid clinched the silver medal with a time of 10.34 seconds. Dunkley ultimately took home the bronze medal for Jamaica.

Howell also surpassed his first-place time of 10.30 in this event from the 2023 CARIFTA games, displaying his consistency, persistence, and determination to win. It was also a personal best for him and understood to be a new Cayman Islands junior record.

The results get even more positive when one appreciates that Reid erased his 2023 CARIFTA time of 10.63 in this event as well. Reid’s hard work is reflected in the results.

The duo now look forward to achieving further excellence as they continue to excel in this event.
