BDF celebrates 134 recruits, appoints first female Force Sergeant Major

BELMOPAN, Thurs. July 16, 2026

   The Belize Defence Force (BDF) ushered in a new chapter on July 15 with the passing-out of 134 recruits from Intake #69, and the appointment of its first female Force Sergeant Major, marking a milestone in the institution’s history. The ceremony celebrated the successful completion of 18 weeks of intensive military training by the new soldiers, including 20 women, while also witnessing the official handover of the Force Sergeant Major appointment from Warrant Officer Class One Wilfredo Majano to Warrant Officer Class One Dee-Ancor C. Grinage Reyes.

   Reyes becomes the first woman to hold the position of Force Sergeant Major, the highest rank attainable by an enlisted soldier without becoming a commissioned officer. In the role, she will serve as the principal advisor to the BDF Commander on matters relating to discipline, standards, and the welfare of soldiers.

   Addressing members of the Force during the ceremony, outgoing Force Sergeant Major Majano thanked officers and soldiers for their support throughout his tenure, and encouraged them to rally behind his successor. “To the officers, warrant officers and soldiers of the Belize Defence Force, thanks for the support during my tenure as Force Sergeant Major, and I request of you to give that and more support to the incoming Sergeant Major. Today we are celebrating history in the Belize Defence Force with the passing out of our new recruits, and also with us having our first female Sergeant Major of the Belize Defence Force.”

   Majano also offered words of encouragement to Reyes as she assumes her new responsibilities. “Keep doing what you do. Continue upholding the standards of the Force. Maintain leadership presence to your troops; listen to them, take care of your morale and well-being,” he said.

   In her first address as Force Sergeant Major, Reyes pledged to lead with integrity while advocating for the welfare and professional development of the men and women under her command. “I accept this appointment with a clear understanding of its responsibilities: support your commanding intent, offer honest advice, uphold discipline and standards, and serve the members and families of the Belize Defence Force. I will listen to your concerns, advocate for your welfare, and support your development. In return, I expect every soldier to uphold the standard, serve with pride, respect and commitment.”

   The passing-out ceremony also marked the official start of military service for the newest members of the BDF after months of physically and mentally demanding training. Prime Minister John Briceño, serving as Interim Minister of National Defence and Border Security, congratulated the recruits, describing their achievement as the beginning of a life dedicated to service. “Among these 134 recruits are 20 outstanding women who, with their male counterparts, successfully completed a demanding journey that tested their discipline, resilience and commitment. Over the past 18 weeks of training, you have transformed from civilians into soldiers, entrusted with the responsibility of defending our nation and serving its people. The uniform you wear today is more than a symbol of achievement; it represents honor, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to duty.”

   The ceremony not only welcomed a new intake of soldiers into the Belize Defence Force, but also marked a historic leadership transition, with Dee-Ancor C. Grinage Reyes becoming the first woman to hold one of the military’s most senior enlisted appointments.
