UB applies for international accreditation to SACSCOC

The University of Belize (UB) has taken what administrators describe as a historic step in its pursuit of international recognition after formally submitting its application for accreditation candidacy to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The submission, which is being overseen by the Dean of UB’s Medical school, Dr. Lisa Johnson, marks the beginning of the formal accreditation process, and is the result of several years of institutional preparation aimed at aligning the national university with internationally recognized standards of higher education.
While the application does not mean that the university has achieved candidacy or accreditation, it represents a significant milestone in UB’s long-term effort to enhance academic quality and institutional effectiveness. According to the university, the application follows extensive work to strengthen its academic and administrative systems, including improvements to faculty credentialing, quality assurance, institutional effectiveness, and governance policies.
Director of the Quality Assurance Department, Tritia Stuart-Gordon described the submission as another important step in UB’s ongoing commitment to excellence. “Excellence is not simply a goal, it is our commitment. We are taking another critical step in strengthening our institution as we continue our journey towards accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This milestone is an important one.”
Stuart-Gordon explained that the university will now await SACSCOC’s review to determine whether it is ready to advance to the next stage of the process. “Following submission, we will await SACSCOC’s official review and feedback regarding the status of our application. This stage allows evaluators to assess our readiness as an institution pursuing accreditation. Should recommendations or revisions be identified during the review process, our team will work diligently to address every requirement.”
If the application is approved, the university will move forward with preparations for an official onsite evaluation, during which SACSCOC reviewers will conduct a comprehensive assessment of UB’s academic programmes, governance, operations and institutional practices. A successful review would allow the university to attain candidacy status before continuing toward full accreditation.
Stuart-Gordon said the process extends far beyond earning an international designation, emphasizing that it reflects the university’s broader commitment to its students and the country. “This journey represents far more than achieving accreditation; it reflects our unwavering promise to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, partners, and the nation of Belize—a promise to uphold the highest standards of academic excellence, accountability and continuous improvement.”
University officials say international accreditation would strengthen the credibility of UB’s academic programmes while expanding educational and professional opportunities for students, faculty and graduates.
