Police in Honduras reported that a 49-year-old day labourer was arrested in Gracias, Lempira, and charged with homicide after gunning down his neighbour on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Reportedly, the killer was taking revenge for a previous incident.

Police explained that the victim, Juan Pablo Benítez Miranda, was on the patio of his home with his wife, 12-year-old son and brother on Saturday night.

Heavily armed suspects appeared and “without saying a word, began shooting.”

Benítez Miranda’s brother and others ran for cover and escaped injury.

However, Benítez Miranda lost his life in the incident.

Police said that witnesses reported that the killer accused Benítez Miranda’s brother of “being responsible for killing a relative” and “the attack was directed towards him” in “revenge.”

After completing their investigation, a team of agents from the Police Investigation Directorate (DPI), with support from the National Directorate of Prevention and Community Security, arrested the killer in the village of Rodeo Quelacasque in the municipality of Gracias.

Commenting on the arrest, authorities said, “DPI authorities reiterate their commitment to continue working in the fight against violence and guaranteeing the right to life of all inhabitants and in this way reducing the rates of impunity in the country.”
