BELIZE CITY, Thurs. July 2, 2026
“Look at me. I am Belize at 45” is the theme selected by the National September Celebrations Committee for this year’s festivities, which Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, Hon. Francis Fonseca unveiled at the Government House Museum of Fine Art in Belize City on Wednesday afternoon, July 1.
It is the brainchild of Amber Janelle Mariano, 18, of Belize City, who now has the $2,000 prize, presented to her by Minister Fonseca, to assist her studies in pre-law at St. John’s Junior College.
Addressing the gathering, Minster Fonseca first observed the historical roots of our people. “For hundreds of years, our Creole brothers and sisters endured the horrors of enslavement. Our Garifuna brothers and sisters faced near extinction and genocide; while our [Maya and] Mestizo brothers and sisters survived a 50-year war in northern Yucatan. More recently our sisters and brothers from Central America migrated here, seeking refuge from civil war. Learning and knowing each other’s history, it’s not just a pastime, it is a vital national project. It informs us that modern Belizean women and men are by blood and spirit the descendants of struggle, resistance and survival.
He then highlighted our unique cultural tapestry at 45 years of nationhood. “At 45 years old, our cultural mosaic remains an essential treasure of our nation building efforts, the way we perfectly harness the vibrant vibes of the Caribbean and the rich heritage of Central America. It’s not just unique; it is a gift of the human spirit for us to protect, cherish and develop. Just look at our food, and we can appreciate the complexity of our culture and the value of safeguarding who we are, simply by how we prepare what we eat within our communities.
And he wrapped up his address by exhorting Belizeans to celebrate our nation with gratitude at all the festivities. “So my friends, join us on Emancipation Day Festival, at the Carnival and J’ouvert, and the private and public concerts and bashments. On our magical history tour, our youth summit, our Belize National Orchestra performances, our Pan Yaad, our official 10th and 21st September ceremonies across Belize, and so much more. Sometimes in the rush of daily life, we forget to be grateful. But let us remember, Belize remains the nation that can celebrate many things. ‘Look at me, I am Belize’; you are Belize, we are Belize, let us carry this pride forward. Happy 45th anniversary, Belize!” enthused Minister Fonseca.
Fonseca is now back in office after a two-month convalescence from triple bypass surgery at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. He admitted he was not yet fully 100-percent recovered, but getting stronger and back toward full functionality every day.
