Two men, Nelson Hemsley and Glenn Lamb, Jr. died in a head-on collision between a black Ford Escape SUV and a large Ford van near Hattieville between Miles 16 and 17 on the George Price Highway around 8:00 Saturday evening, May 2.
Police arrived to find Hemsley and Lamb trapped inside a Ford Escape, and they were unresponsive. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero informed the media on Monday morning that the Ford Escape was reportedly speeding towards Belmopan, when it collided with a motorcycle travelling in the same direction and caromed into the oncoming lane, where it collided head-on with the Ford van, which was returning to Belize City with Belize Telemedia workers from the National Agricultural Show in Belmopan.
Investigators have not determined whether consumption of alcohol was a factor in the accident, but Romero said that they are awaiting the results of toxicological analysis from the deceased to determine if they were under the influence. Police did take a urine sample from the driver of the van, Chadwick Ysaguirre. There were no fatalities among the passengers of the van, who were treated at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where some were released and others were admitted in stable condition.
