ST. THOMAS — Police are investigating a shots-fired incident in Anna’s Retreat after an adult male reported that gunfire rang out near his home and that he believed bullets passed above his head, prompting him to take cover as officers later found apparent impacts on a residential structure and numerous spent shell casings in the area.

According to the V.I. Police Department, the incident occurred on Saturday, January 4, in the Anna’s Retreat area. Officers were dispatched after receiving an alert from the ShotSpotter system.

When police arrived, they made contact with an adult male who said he had been seated outside his residence when he heard gunshots. The man reported that he believed bullets passed above his head, causing him to immediately drop to the ground and crawl inside his home for safety.

Police said the man told officers he did not see who fired the shots and was not aware of anyone who would intend to harm him or his family.

As officers continued their investigation, they located several pock marks on the residential structure and found numerous spent shell casings in the vicinity. The scene was processed by the Forensic Identification Unit, and the case has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Bureau for follow-up.

The VIPD said the matter remains under active investigation.
