Premier: “Deeply Troubled By The Horrific Shooting Incident” Loop Cayman Islands

In the First Sitting of the Third Meeting of the 2023-24 Session of Parliament today, February 26, 2024, the Premier, Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, and Roy McTaggart, the Leader of the Opposition, made national statements regarding the shooting at the Ed Bush field on Sunday, February 25.

The Premier said:

I like the rest of our community and deeply troubled by the horrific shooting incident which took place at the Ed Bush Stadium last night, being Sunday the 25th day of February 2024, leaving several persons being treated for serious injuries at our George Town Hospital.

The Government conveys our deepest sympathy and fervent prayer to all those affected by this unfortunate incident.

For those who assisted victims, the Premier said she was “appreciative of the actions taken by the RCIPS, first responders, medical professionals and many bystanders who charged into danger and saved lives.”

The Premier appealed to “all members of the community who witnessed the incident to come forward and provide information.”

“Anyone with information is urged to contact the RCIPS,” she added.

Concerning the next steps, the Premier said she convened “an emergency meeting with all Members of Parliament and relevant Government officials at 1:30 pm today, which will then be followed by a press briefing at 3:00 pm to further update the public.”

The Leader of the Opposition echoed the concerns of the Premier.

He said:

Everyone is saddened and we are all deeply concerned with regard to the events that unfolded last night.

I just wish to assure her, her government and the people of the Cayman Islands, that we share those concerns and that we support all the efforts that will be expanded to ensure that we bring this matter to conclusion and the right people are soon brought to justice and that minds and feelings can be calmed.
