Police Investigate Fatal Shooting of 28-Year-Old Matthew Gumbs in St. Thomas


ST. THOMAS — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 28-year-old Matthew Gumbs on Sunday, March 9, in Estate Mariendahl, St .Thomas.

According to the V.I Police Department, at approximately 5:01 p.m. the 911 Emergency Call Center received a call from a concerned citizen reporting that a man was down and bleeding. The caller later informed dispatchers that the man appeared to have been shot and was unresponsive.
Responding officers arrived in Estate Mariendahl, where they found an unresponsive Black male with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. Emergency Medical Technicians also responded to the scene and, after assessing the victim’s condition, determined at 5:14 p.m. that he showed no signs of life.
The victim was later positively identified by next of kin as 28-year-old Matthew Gumbs.
The VIPD's Major Crimes Unit has launched an investigation into the shooting. No suspects have been identified, and the motive behind the killing remains unknown. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
