Honduras National Police said today, April 8, 2024, they captured 23-year-old Suany Jasmin Pesquera in Copán for the beating and strangling of her newborn baby to death in December 2023.  Pesquera reportedly killed and buried the child under a patio in an attempt to hide that the child was not for her husband, who was in the United States.

According to the authorities, “Pesquera tried to hide her pregnancy during the nine months before the baby was born, claiming to suffer from cirrhosis and cysts to justify her physical condition.”

The authorities added: “Pesquera’s eldest daughter witnessed the crime and alerted neighbours after witnessing the scene, which led to the rapid intervention of the authorities.”

The body of the lifeless one-month-old baby was found on January 30, 2024, under a patio in the village of San Andrés Minas.

Pesquera is being charged with the crime of patricide to the detriment of her newborn child.

Commenting on the arrest, the authorities said, “The capture of Suany Jasmin Pesquera is an important step in the search for justice for the victims of these crimes.”

They added: “The National Police reaffirms its commitment to citizen security and the protection of the most vulnerable and will continue to work tirelessly to combat any form of domestic violence.”
