A man shot a Canadian woman dead and injured six others before killing himself on Monday at Mexico’s Teotihuacan pyramids, a popular tourist and archaeological site outside of Mexico City, according to authorities.
Mexico’s security cabinet said the injured people were receiving medical care. Canada’s foreign ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment from Reuters.
“What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply pains us,” Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said on X, adding that she is closely monitoring the situation and that her government is in contact with the Canadian embassy.
“I have instructed the Security Cabinet to thoroughly investigate these events and provide all necessary support. Personnel from the Secretariat of the Interior and Culture are already heading to the site to provide assistance and accompaniment, along with local authorities.”
The pre-Hispanic city was one of the most important cultural centres in Mesoamerica.
