Caribbean Utilities Company circulated information to customers today, February 23, 2024, discussing the benefits of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the synergy between LNG and solar.
Regarding LNG usage, CUC said they are “excited to share insights into the pivotal role played by liquefied natural gas (LNG) in achieving a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 as we transition to renewables.”
CUC said that LNG also has the following benefits:
Cleaner fuel with lower carbon emissions than petrol and dieselLower cost than petrol and dieselLower maintenance costs due to low carbon build-up
CUC added, “Using natural gas for energy produces fewer emissions of various air pollutants and carbon dioxide (CO2) compared to burning diesel for the same amount of energy.”
Comparing LNG usage to fossil fuels, CUC said:
Natural gas combustion generally produces fewer impurities and pollutants compared to other fossil fuels.
This cleaner combustion reduces the formation of deposits and corrosive substances within engines and equipment, contributing to lower maintenance costs.
Regarding the transition to LNG, CUC explained:
CUC has begun upgrading our current units to run on both natural gas and diesel.
By utilising existing engines, we will leverage current investments and facilities to provide significant cost savings while reducing carbon emissions.
CUC provided an LNG “fact sheet” to customers, which they can access using the below link:
