Seven air traffic controllers at the BVI Airports Authority recently completed a course that will help them accurately assess weather on the job.

The certifications they obtained by passing the Aeronautical Meteorology Observer Training Course — which was conducted in collaboration with the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology — will help the BVIAA meet international standards in aviation safety and operational efficiency, officials said.

“Having trained meteorological observers on staff is critical for ensuring that we continue to provide safe and efficient air traffic services,” said Officer in Charge Diana Maduro-Romney. “This achievement strengthens our operational capacity and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to building a highly skilled team.”

‘MET observers’

Air Traffic Services Manager Phil DaSilva praised the officers who completed the training.

“Officers are now equipped with the critical knowledge and skills required to observe, collect and report aeronautical meteorological information in accordance with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization and the World Meteorological Organization,” he said, adding, “Once operational, the new MET observers will enhance the efficiency of the Air Traffic Services Unit, allowing for better resource management while maintaining the highest levels of service integrity.”

The course was facilitated by John Peters, a CIMH employee with 40 years of experience, according to the BVIAA.

‘Trusted partner’

BVIAA Director of Operations Kyle Cummings said the CIMH has long been a “trusted partner” of the authority.

“This collaboration is invaluable, not only for the authority but also for the territory on a whole,” he added.

Dawn Corea-Leonard, the BVIAA’s director of people and culture, said the authority strives to train its staff to international standards.

“This recent training demonstrates our commitment to providing our team with the tools they need to excel in their roles, ultimately benefiting the entire aviation sector and the territory,” she said.
