The University of the Virgin Islands is set to host its popular annual fundraiser, “Afternoon on the Green,” on the scenic Herman E. Moore Golf Course in St. Thomas.

Scheduled for Sunday, March 17 from noon to 5:00 p.m., this year’s event promises a “Fusion of Flavors to Savor and Explore,” inviting the island’s culinary talents to contribute their best dishes for a noble cause. The fundraiser benefits the Edward Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Fund, dedicated to supporting local students committed to community service.

Dr. Kyza A. Callwood, chair of the event planning committee, expressed enthusiasm for the community’s involvement. “Afternoon on the Green is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wants to get involved in improving the lives of students. We greatly appreciate the generosity of sponsors, volunteers, cooks, and many community members who help make the event a huge success,” he stated.

The beneficiary scholarship fund honors the legacy of Edward Thomas, Sr., a respected local businessman and Chair of the UVI Research & Technology Park Board. Annually, the fund awards scholarships to attend UVI to two deserving St. Thomas high school seniors.

This year’s culinary call-to-action encourages restaurants, caterers, professional chefs, and home cooks to donate specialty dishes, desserts, and native drinks. Prizes await the top vote-getters in categories ranging from Main Dishes to Native Drinks, with the overall winner receiving a portable MiFi device and a year of service from VIYA. In addition to the culinary competition, all participating cooks will be given an Afternoon on the Green apron as a token of appreciation for their contributions. The deadline for cook registration is March 13.

The event promises more than just tantalizing tastes, however. Attendees can look forward to live musical performances by RVP Band and Shaw HP, along with cultural and educational displays. Family-friendly activities will abound, including face painting, Carnival costume-making, and traditional games. A new addition this year is a best-dressed and best hat competition, adding an extra layer of festive fun. “We can’t wait to welcome everyone, and don’t forget it’s St. Patrick’s Day, so be sure to wear your green,” Dr. Callwood added.

Sponsors such as VIYA, VI Council on the Arts, and Firstbank, among others, are generously supporting the event, ensuring a day filled with joy, community spirit, and philanthropy.

To register as a cook, volunteer, or participate in the best-dressed and hat competition, interested parties are encouraged to visit aog.uvi.edu or call (340) 693-1047. As a reminder, no vending is allowed during this fundraising event, which focuses solely on community giving and support.
