BELMOPAN, Wed. June 24, 2026

After a seven-year hiatus, the Belize Police Department has officially revived its longstanding “Du Di Rait Ting” program, an initiative designed to recognize students who demonstrate perseverance, good character, and academic excellence despite facing significant personal challenges. The program, which was first launched in 2005, honors young people who continue to make positive choices while overcoming adversity such as poverty, family difficulties, and other social challenges.

On Wednesday, June 24th, the department recognized 33 students from 18 schools across the country during a special awards ceremony. Senior Superintendent Gerald Jones, Commander of the Community Oriented Policing Unit, explained that the program became inactive following the COVID-19 pandemic, and had not received nominations between 2020 and 2024; but in 2026, the department received 44 submissions.

According to Jones, the initiative serves as a way of rewarding young people who remain focused on their goals despite difficult circumstances. “We see that as the best initiative in order for us to give back to them for doing the right thing, because of the challenges that they have been facing; they remain positive, and that is what we want to encourage, that they continue to do the right things,” Jones said. “The fact that we’re encouraging students to remain in school and continue to do the right thing, regardless of challenges and so forth, we encourage them to do that,” he continued.

Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado said the program’s return reflects the department’s commitment to engaging young people beyond traditional law enforcement efforts. “It is an important opportunity for us to highlight and engage students at high school, and highlight the challenges they are going through and how they overcome these challenges,” Rosado said. “Law enforcement is more than just enforcing the law; it’s also engaging the youth in positive ways. Hence, the reintroduction.”

Among the top award recipients were 15-year-old Dhayven Swift, a first-form student of Anglican Cathedral College, who earned first place in his class; and 17-year-old Erguin Alvarez, a former student of Mopan Technical High School, who received second place.

Reflecting on the impact of the program, Swift said it promotes positive values and decision-making among young people. “We learn how to get self-discipline, respect. We learn how to get development and, like, not to follow bad people; you do your own thing, following the right steps and making no bad decisions in your life,” he said.

Alvarez credited the initiative with helping to build upon the confidence and determination he already possessed. “What the ‘Do Di Rait Ting’ program basically did was just enhance that sort of feeling that I already had, and showcase my talent to the wonderful people of Belize,” Alvarez said that Police officials say the program will continue to serve as a platform for recognizing outstanding students while encouraging young Belizeans to remain committed to education, personal growth, and positive contributions to their communities.
