Waste Management Restores Mon Bijou Bin Site After Removing 2,800 Illegally Dumped Tires
The V.I. Waste Management Authority has restored the Mon Bijou bin site on St. Croix after removing approximately 2,800 illegally dumped tires from an area officials say had been repeatedly used as an unauthorized dumping location.
According to VIWMA, the illegal dumping, particularly of discarded tires, created environmental and public health concerns. The authority said dedicated cleanup efforts significantly improved the condition of the area and restored the site to its proper use.
“Restoring the Mon Bijou site reflects VIWMA's commitment to protecting the environment and the health of our community members,” said Executive Director Hannibal Ware. “We urge the community to partner with us by disposing of waste responsibly and reporting violations while we work toward a permanent solution to illegal tire dumping.”
VIWMA reminded the public that illegal dumping is against the law. Violators are subject to fines of not less than $1,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 180 days.
The authority also warned that illegal dumping poses significant environmental risks, including soil and water contamination, along with threats to public health and safety.
Residents may report illegal dumping or other waste-related violations by emailing [email protected] or [email protected]. Reports may also be made by calling 340-715-9100 on St. Thomas or 340-712-4962 on St. Croix.
