One hundred twenty-two people were naturalised as British overseas territory citizens during two ceremonies held Feb. 24 at Government House.

They heard congratulatory remarks from Governor Daniel Pruce, acting Premier Julian Fraser and Registrar General Tashi O’Flaherty-Maduro, according to Government Information Services.

Mr. Pruce said the Virgin Islands benefits from the intermingling of cultures strengthened by naturalisations.

“The shared values in our community include respect and concern for others who are less fortunate, or simply those who are considered to be different,” he said. “Perhaps when you first came here, you felt different yourself. But as the Bible reminds us, ‘You shall love the stranger, for you were once a stranger in the land.’”

Mr. Fraser said he was pleased to see residents who have contributed to the VI’s success achieve the milestone.

“Today we join a distinguished group of individuals who have committed themselves to the development of this territory; who have followed its laws, embraced its values and enriched its communities through their hard work and perseverance,” he said. “Your naturalisation is not merely a legal transaction: It is a symbol of appreciation for your years of service, commitment and respect for the Virgin Islands which you now call home.”

Ms. O’Flaherty-Maduro spoke similarly. “Becoming a citizen is more than the granting of a legal status,” she said. “It is the embracing of a shared identity, shared responsibility and a shared future. It means that you have chosen these beautiful Virgin Islands as your home, not simply as a place to live but as a place to belong.”

‘Diverse backgrounds’

She added that the VI is built “not only by those born here, but also by those who come” to invest, raise families, build businesses and otherwise contribute to the community.

“Your diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences strengthen us and remind us that unity does not require uniformity,” she said. “As you take your pledge of loyalty to the Virgin Islands and oath of allegiance, reflect on the journey that brought you here.”
