A 76-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the 1997 death of Eva Glee Ebanks in the Cayman Islands.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) reported the man is a resident of Cayman Brac.

RCIPS said the arrest came after their Serious Crime Review Team reopened the cold case three years ago.

The man, whose identity was not released by police, was later freed on bail pending further investigations.

Ebanks was 35 years old when she was killed on October 16, 1997, after being struck by a car.

Reports said Ebanks, a mother of five, was last seen getting into a vehicle after leaving the Coral Isle Bar with a man she knew.

Ebanks was hit at least two times by a vehicle, which also dragged her body along South Side Road West on Cayman Brac.

Ebanks was found clinging to life, and she was taken to the Faith Hospital where she died from severe loss of blood.

Following news of the breakthrough in the case, Ebanks’ daughterSchilo Scott expressed joy that her mother was one step closer to receiving justice.

“Today, I experienced the most emotionally overwhelming day of my life. I received news of an arrest made in connection to the murder of my mother almost 27 years ago. While justice is just beginning, I take comfort in my faith and what the Lord has written,” she said in a Facebook post.

She continued: “As we continue to seek justice for our beloved mother, Eva Glee Ebanks, my family and I ask for your thoughts and prayers during this emotionally trying time. May we all find solace in praying for one another, and may God’s peace, love, and comfort be with my family and all those who have lost a very special loved one.”
