CaribWorldNews, KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, Tuesday, November 16, 2010: Voters in the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines are set to go to the polls ahead of the Christmas holidays.
As St. Vincent and the Grenadines continue to pick up the pieces following Hurricane Tomas, the country`s Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, announced that Election Day will be December 13th.
Gonsalves made the announcement Sunday at a rally of his United Labor Party. Nomination Day is set for November 26th.
Despite criticism from the country`s main opposition party, Gonsalves has told supporters that he was confident his ULP administration would be returned to office based on its accomplishments since taking over the government in 2005.
Gonsalves won the 2001 general elections by a landslide of 12 seats to 3, after a close run in the 1998 elections. He was re-elected in the December 2005 elections with the same parliamentary ratio.
The PM is also the parliamentary representative for the constituency of North Central Winward. He has held that position since March 29, 2001.
PM Gonsalves received his Ph.D. in political science from UWI, Mona, and went on to receive a law degree from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados before returning to practice law and to becoming an active politician in his homeland.
