A man died in a single-vehicle crash shortly after 6 a.m. Nov. 21 in the Major Bay area of East End, police said.
“Initial investigations indicate that the vehicle was travelling along the Blackburne Highway when the driver swerved to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road, lost control and collided with a concrete wall topped with a steel fence,” police said in a Nov. 26 statement.
Donovan Burton, a Jamaican residing in Greenland, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The other two men in the vehicle were transported to the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital for treatment, and they were in stable condition as of Tuesday.
Police said investigations were ongoing, but they didn’t provide further information.
Mr. Burton worked at the Trellis Bay Market Bar & Grill, which posted a remembrance on Facebook on Thursday afternoon describing him as a “friend, father and dedicated worker.”
“We extend heartfelt condolences to his family,” the business stated. “We will surely miss you in our kitchen.”
Road safety
Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer expressed condolences to Mr. Donovan’s friends and family.
Mr. Rymer, who holds responsibility for roads, also urged motorists to exercise caution to avoid such incidents in the future.
“It is crucial to adhere to speed limits and remain vigilant, especially in challenging conditions,” he said, adding, “Let us all commit to driving responsibly and looking out for one another during these difficult times.”
