Guyanese Boxers Now Runaways

CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Oct. 20, 2010: Three Guyanese boxers who represented the South American nation at the Commonwealth Games have absconded during a stopover at JFK.

Guyana news reports name the three as Clevon Rock, Devon Boatswain and Dexter Jordan and say they abandoned their coaches and teammates at New York`s Kennedy International Airport as the squad was returning to Guyana via the US, after the recent New Delhi games.

President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle yesterday confirmed the boxers disappearance and called the actions of the three as `unpatriotic, selfish and disgraceful.` He added that their failure to return to their homeland is `a disgrace not only to boxing but sports in this country in general.` None of the boxers performed well at the games.

In recent years, U.S. officials have rejected visa applications for Guyanese athletes because of fears they would not return. With a gross domestic product of $2.024 billion as of last year, Guyana is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.
