The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) concluded a two-day training course on COVID-19 Ventilation Requirements in Buildings to enhance the skills of its Environmental Health Officers, Engineers and Laboratory staff from May 3 to 4, 2022.

The two-day seminar facilitated by Ms. Ruth Otero and Mr. Armando Chamorro, environmental consultants from CIH Environmental Solutions Inc., introduced techniques for the evaluation of various aspects associated with proper ventilation in public and private buildings. In addition, elements specifically associated with dilution ventilation related to COVID-19 were addressed and the attendees also learned how to ensure that HVAC systems were operating in such a way as to minimize the potential for SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission.

DEH Director, Mr. Richard Simms explained the importance of this training in the daily work of members of its department. “For the last two years, we have been facing the battle to prevent and minimize the spread of COVID-19. Ventilation and air quality are crucial aspects of the work we carried out at the Department. As science is continuously evolving DEH continues to provide opportunities for our staff as well as other agencies to continue learning and remain current and effective”, he said.

Participants had the opportunity to gain an understanding of IAQ and ventilation fundamentals, recognize and anticipate potential ventilation issues as they relate to COVID-19 and formulate mitigation procedures to address such issues. The invitation to the training was also extended to colleagues within the CIG who have responsibilities related to building control and maintenance and/or Public and Environmental Health.
